We had a busy Halloween. Whitney went to Boo at the Zoo to trick or treat twice because Mom had a table there for FLVS. We have candy up to our eyeballs. Whitney likes most of it but is definately swayed towards chocolate.
Whitney had a really good OT week. We started brushing her again. I think it is helping her coordination at therapy. She seemed less frustrated this week.
We had her IEP meeting last week. After refining a few goals, i think all will be well. They will be reporting to us more often, which will help. Her therapists are all on the ball and seem to really understand her. Of course, Whitney has them a little bamboozled with her ablities, but we can help with those skills at home.
This is about our daughter, Whitney, and our journey through discovering, treating, and living with developmental delays.

School Starts - year 2!
Whitney is doing well at school. She actually said a 4 word analysis-level sentence to me the other day. Of course I forgot to write it down, but it was pretty incredible at the time. She is really trying hard to express herself in words, although we often have to remind her that we dont understand grunts.
She actually looks BIG compared to the new kids in her class. I remember how little she looked, and how few skills she had last year. That's what the new kids look like this year. It's good to know progress is being made. She uses her walker in school to free up the teacher's hand. Gives her independence, although she would rather crawl. She's taking a couple of independent steps here and there if you trick her into it. She likes to walk holding on to daddy's back pocket. It's mostly a security issue. She is pretty strong.
She's doing a great job recognizing letters and numbers. She either says the letter name or sound. I'll take either at this point. She "reads" books and loves it when she recognizes numbers in them. She counts all the time, although the number 7 gets missed 99.9% of the time. It's hard for her to say. She tends to skip words that have L's or V's.

4 Years OLD!
Wow, Whitney turns 4 this week. It's hard to believe.
We are taking her to Disney. We have done a full-court press on her with Disney characters so she will have some understanding of the giant characters. She sings "cinder-la, cinder-la de da da la de da da" to the cinderella song. It's very cute. She has also discovered a love for Mickey Mouse and friends.
We are potty training. It took a while but she is getting the idea. She has been taking off her diaper at some point during the night, which has caused some big messes. We figured it was time. M&M's are her potty reward. She calls them M-'n-OP's. That is too adorable.
She is off for the next 6 weeks (oh my 6 weeks!). She and Rose are enjoying their days, as much as potty training allows.

3 years, 8 months
I'm having a very frustrating day.
So many months have passed with nothing too new to report. We have avoided doctors like a plague. I just can't even bring myself to call them to tell them we are not coming any more. I have given up trying to find out what is going on, and we are just going to treat symptoms.
Whitney has gained skills, most certainly. She now walks holding one hand, and is using her walker very well. She walks out to the pond easily now using her walker. Her pincer grasp is quite improved - M&Ms helped that situation.
Her language is improving. We actually heard a 4 word sentence the other night, "I'll get my book," after she dropped it on the floor. Bursts of language. She probably has a vocab of over 100 words now.
Self help skills are improving. Whitney does a good job brushing her teeth, and is able to remove shoes and socks with some aggrivation.
She still loves school and barely says goodbye to us each day. We get good reports, but not enough information. It's a little frustrating. Her teacher told me this week we only get one IEP review per year. That totally seems inadequate with such a young child gaining skills so rapidly. I'm going to need to follow up on that.
So now for my frustration. We went to the Conductive Education center last week for an evaluation for Whitney to join a summer walking challenge program. Six intensive weeks of therapy. Well, little WWW was a pain of course....she hates therapy and does everything to avoid it. She knew right away this was a therapist.
So they call me...and they are not sure Whitney will be successful because of her inability to pay attention for 3o minutes at a time, and are not sure she will be able to take their direction.
LORD, it's like being told your kid is too disabled for the disabled class. I just wanted to scream and cry and pound my head on the ground.
Well, they offered to bring her in to take two classes during the week to see if she can do the class, so there is still a chance she will cooperate and get into the program. I really assigned many hopes to the program, based on other testimonies, and this was a bit devistating to me.
